Soran University Commemorates the Halabja Chemical Attack's 37th Anniversary


On Sunday, March 16, 2025, Soran University held a solemn commemoration marking the 37th anniversary of the chemical attack on Halabja. The event, attended by Asst.Prof.Dr. Sherwan Sharif Qurtas, President of Soran University, university council members, faculty, and staff, included several commemorative activities.

The commemoration began with a moment of silent reverence in front of the Soran University presidency building, where attendees paid tribute to the victims of the Halabja attack.

Following that, a symposium titled "Halabja: A Wound in the Memory of a Resilient People—A Multidimensional Analysis of the Chemical Attack" was held. This symposium was a collaborative effort by the Faculties of Law, Political Sciences and Management, and the Faculty of Education.

During the symposium, Soran University President delivered a speech, stating," Today we commemorate the tragedy and unhealed wound of our people, which is one of the greatest genocides of humanity, the chemical attack and massacre of innocent people in Halabja."He said that higher education should pay more attention to the scientification of national issues and anniversaries, and conduct scientific research on national issues, adding that the Halabja tragedy must be introduced to the world as the Holocaust, and published in major magazines and newspapers.

The Symposium featured two panels.

Panel 1: A Religious, Political, and Legal Analysis of the Chemical Attack on Halabja

Moderator: Dr. Dilsoz Jalal Hussain

- Dr. Madih Mohammed Omar: A Religious Analysis of the Chemical Attack on Halabja.

- Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahman Karim Darwish: The Halabja Chemical Attack in the Perspective of Local and International Politics.

- Dr. Aram Nabi Mohammed: The Halabja Chemical Attack in the Local and International Law Perspective.

Panel 2: A Documentary, Literary, and Administrative Reading of the Chemical Attack on Halabja

- Moderator: Dr. Amir Ahmed Hamad Amin

-Asst. Prof. Dr. Sadiq Hamma Gharib: Description of the Tragedy of Halabja.

- Dr. Juwan Abdul Qader Abdullah: Halabja in the Eyes of Poets.

- Asst. Lect. Karim Kawa Karim: Victims of Halabja Between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region.

Finally, Soran University President presented certificates of participation to the panelists and panel moderators.
